Terms of Use and Licences

Information on use of images from the media centre

All images provided in the media centre by Alfred-Wegner-Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung (AWI), are subject to the German copyright laws and to the licences the AWI grants. The given rights of use are to be observed. They are cited in the meta data - which are shown in the image overview in the media centre. For all purposes going beyond the granted terms of use and licences, new particular contractual agreements with the author or the owner of the Copyright are required. This applies particularly to all commercial and advertising purposes.

Creative Commons Lizenz CC-BY 4.0

Licence CC-BY 4.0

Under the Creative Commons Licence CC-BY 4.0 the Alfred Wegener Institute provides images for public use. This licence does not concern the protection of the trademark (outlined below), which is still in force. Images with this licence contain the following declaration in the meta data:

Terms of use: The Creative Commons License does not extend to the logo of the AWI (which is part of the trademark) and all other parts of the corporate identity of the AWI. The logo of the AWI - even on research infrastructures - may not be used whithout a written permission of the AWI. / www.awi.de/cc.

AWI-Lizenz für Berichterstattung

Licence for reporting on AWI

The use of images the AWI provides under the declaration "reporting on AWI" is limited. These images are allowed to be used in any editorial environment for printing and digital media together with the copyright declaration. This includes also products of AWI and its employees as well as partner institutions and public authorities. Explicitly excluded from the licence is the use for advertising and commercial purposes or sale, which is prohibited.

Instruction: Release for reporting on AWI
Copyright notice: Alfred-Wegener-Institut/firstname surname
Terms of use : All rights reserved / Editorial use only / With copyright notice only / No Sale / No Promotion.

Sonderlizenzen

Special licences

Some images in the media centre may come with special licences - for example because they derive from older archives or are specific cases. This may happen if the AWI provides images but is not the licensor. Authors of images are able to licence images themselves - for example: CC-BY-NC 4.0 - in this case the commercial use is excluded and that means also, that the media for example newspapers and online news sevices are excluded. The CC-BY-SA 4.0 means "share alike" – the image has to be shared under the same licence - even if it was changed somehow.

Therefore it is quite necessary to respect the terms of use and licences given in the meta data of the image.

Trademark/Corporate Identity

The Alfred Wegener Institute has patented elements of its corporate identity. The brand of AWI includes also the logo (including previous versions).
The protection of the mark by the patent means that images containing elements of corporate identity are not allowed to be used without the written permission of the AWI - for example for advertising purposes.
